1 October 2001 Dear editor, Lately, I have read quite a few articles about the 9/11 Attacks on your web site. Truth to tell, I found them disturbing. I wrote to you and the authors a couple times to voice my concern and offered my point of view. With your permission, I would like to present my own article to all of you (article contributors, regular fans and casual web surfers). The name of my article is "A Thai American's Point of view on the 9/11 Attack". As a Thai American who have seen and been exposed to the Good, Bad and Ugly side of my beloved countries (both Thailand and the U.S.A). I want to make it clear that I do not represent the US Government, US Army and majority of American people. This is an article from a person who strongly believes in fair play and equal justice for all. I am a Catholic who practices the Faith. I strongly believe in our God (The Holy Trinity; Father, Lord Jesus and Holy spirit) and has undying love and devotion to Mother Mary. I also know that life is not fair. But, you must make the best out of it. And, social injustice is an ancient history that has been debated and caused significant changes through out human history. I also know that our Lord Jesus got a full taste of the social injustice during his time on earth and was executed politically. Praise the Lord for his love for us! I will not attempt to convince you to change your belief, personal value and perceptions of what you have seen and been exposed to through out your childhood and adult lives. Bottom line: You and I are product of our societies. I just want to offer you a different point of view/perspective and hopefully you will be receptive (open-minded) to mine and use it as a part for your thought process in order to reach the ultimate truth. Remember, THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE! Just like the motto of this outstanding web site, ISSARA.COM. Whoever planned, supported and executed the attacks of 9/11 are criminals of the lowest life form. Over five thousands of innocent lives have been cut short, thousands of loved ones (relatives, friends and coworkers) emotionally and financially affected by these heinous crimes. Millions of Americans and citizens of civilized world ways of life are forever changed. Let's make it clear: the victims at WTC were not combatants. You can say the victims, my brothers and sisters in arms, at the Pentagon were soldiers and U.S. Department of Defense employees and contractors were combatants and therefore they were fair game. Grudgingly, I can accept it because the leader of the suspects publicly declared war on us, Americans, back in 1996. Shame on us. But the question is "Why they attacked the innocent people not all the military installations". A part of the answer is it was easier to attack them because they were not trained to fight and had no mean to retaliate. Military term is enrichment target, easy pick! Remember, the leader of the suspects repeatedly said they were on the crusade, Jihad, for the faithful Muslims. The truth is killing innocent people is not condoned by Islam. We (Muslim, Jews and Christians) have the same GOD. But through out history we used his holy name to kill and pillage for our own reasons and gains. Folks, this is not the ancient time or middle age or colonization period. Most part of civilized world has moved beyond that mentality a long time ago. There are rules and laws that all of us have to abide. These heinous crimes are unacceptable. If you pay attention when you watch TV or read newspapers and have a good grip of English language, you will find out real quick that not once American Government wants to lash out and attack anybody or country that is suspected of the crimes. Our President repeatedly told us and the rest of the world that we would use caution. He asked us to be patient. The President will use all Government resources to fight this war. It will be a long one. This is the war against terrorism. He will not only use our military might but our economics power too. The President also told us that we would win the war. Bottom line: We will punish those who committed the crimes and those who harbored them. Justice, not revenge, will be served! Americans have the reputation of being excessive and larger than life in every thing we do. It is the perception that some how we get stuck with. We are the ones that invented or improved most of the items you use in your daily life. The list starts with paper clip, type writer, electricity, TV, telephone (stationary and mobile), car, plane, computer, internet, rocket, satellite, camera, TV dinner, soft drinks (Coke, Pepsi, Sprite, etc.), movie, Rock and Roll music, world superstars of movie and music industry (You have not arrived until you make it in Hollywood!), Levi jeans, vaccine to fight AID and other disease, birth control pills, cigarettes, chewing gum, mouthwash, laser surgery, stock market, nuclear bomb and weapon of mass destruction, just to name a few. For those of you, we are UGLY AMERICANS. I know the U.S.A. is not perfect. We have the good, the bad and the ugly side just like every country in the world. We made mistakes. But we hope to learn from the mistakes, not to make them again. We try to treat everyone fairly. We play by the rules. We believe in democratic government, freedom of speech and justice for all. Is there any other country in the world that allows the talk show hosts and ordinary people to make fun or ridicule its president or head of country without any retaliation? Great Britain, perhaps? Most of Americans are leveled head, law abiding and loving people. We are generous. We are the number one nation in the world that provides life saving goods and medications to poor nations around the world. Do you know that U.S.A. is the number one contributor to the Afghanistan refugees, $25 million and counting? Let's be fair and responsible when we write an article that will have great impact on others. Do not generalization. Do not use sound bite to sensationalize your article. Do not speak for others unless you have their permission. And do your homework! God blesses you all. Sincerely, Sayan Saevivat
